Kody Brown Shares His Thoughts on “Fooling Around” After Meeting 23-Year-Old Daughter Aurora’s Boyfriend: “You’re Kissing Another Man’s Wife!”

On Sunday’s episode of Sister Wives, Kody Brown shared his (very strong) feelings about pre-marital physical affection, with the father of 18 revealing that he believes in chastity and doesn’t want his kids “fooling around” before saying “I do.”
The failed polygamist weighed in on the topic after meeting his 23-year-old daughter Aurora’s boyfriend, Brodie Utley, at his and wife Robyn’s new Mountain Mansion. Shortly after Brodie arrived at the Brown family home to help Aurora and her family decorate the world’s smallest Christmas tree, Kody told viewers that Brodie is a rancher and, despite the “cliche” about cowboys, he believes he “can trust [his] daughter with this cowboy.”

While he might trust Aurora’s boot-scootin’ boyfriend, Kody still explained to the rancher the importance of “protecting” Aurora– even after Brodie revealed to Kody and Robyn that he had given his girlfriend a pocketknife to carry for protection.

“That’s an interesting concept,” Kody said in response to the random gift. “I like to say, when my daughter’s going out with you, I’m not there to protect her, and so it’s your job to protect her, right?”
When Brodie confirmed that he also believes it’s his job to protect Aurora, Kody proceeded to ask the rancher if he believes it’s his job to protect Aurora from himself as well, to which Brodie replied, “definitely.”

Brodie also joked that he hoped Aurora wouldn’t have to use the knife on him at any point.
Kody then pivoted the conversation to discuss other types of protection within relationships, telling viewers he’s “constantly reminding Aurora and Brodie to take care,” as he doesn’t want any of his kids “fooling around” before marriage.
“ … it’s impossible to be involved with each other in a nature that’s romantic without the potential of hurt,” Kody told the young couple. “And that’s when you get vulnerability, is when you’re willing to take that chance, right?”
Kody went on to tell viewers that he makes it clear to any young man dating one of his daughters that their job is to protect her, “even from yourself.”

“When you’re just dating, you’re kissing another man’s wife, until she’s your wife,” Kody claimed. “And if she doesn’t become your wife, you’re kissing another man’s wife. This is the reason I believe in chastity. It’s like, ‘Don’t take something away from them that doesn’t belong to you.’”
Kody argued that as much as he “loved” Robyn when they began dating, he kept his hands off of her until they were married– something he wants his children to do as well.

While Aurora told viewers it was clear that her dad was “talking about chastity,” she noted that her boyfriend may not have been on the same page during the mid-decoration discussion.
“ … I can tell Brodie’s very much thinking about tactics: ‘I know how to use knives, I’m trained in mixed martial arts, she’s good, sir,’” she said.
This cringy conversation was, of course, reminiscent of an equally cringetastic convo Kody had with the boyfriend of another one of his daughters years ago. Longtime ‘Sister Wives’ viewers will remember Kody giving his then-teenage daughter Mykelti and her new boyfriend the “birds and the bees” talk during Season 7. Kody infamously told the teens that hand-holding was dangerous, but kissing was even more risky because it is essentially a hormone transfer.

“When you kiss, the person that you kiss, their hormones go into your mouth,” Kody insisted at the time. “And it registers certain things that will stimulate both the heart and the body for other reasons.”
