Janelle Brown Recalls How Her Mother Ended Up Marrying Kody’s Father After Trying to Stop Her from Polygamy

Janelle Brown is breaking down her family dynamic with ex Kody Brown.

In the latest episode of TLC’s Sister Wives, Janelle has a meal out with her friends Alice, Kristina and Angela as they ask her about the moment she told her mom she was a polygamist. And as it turns out, that moment led to her mom finding a love of her own.

After Janelle, 56, was “originally introduced to the idea that polygamy” in high school, making it her “life path,” she met Kody, 56, before spiritually tying the knot in 1993.

“I was starting to talk to Kody and I met the family and was really intrigued. My mom’s like, ‘Oh, heck no, heck no, heck no, heck no.’ My mom came to save me and ended up marrying Kody’s dad,” Janelle shared of her mother, Sheryl Usher.

As Janelle explained, her mom believed “no daughter of hers was gonna marry into some crazy cult.”

“And she ended up marrying Kody’s dad and they actually got married three months before we did,” she said of Kody’s father, Winn Brown. “When they decided to get married, I was like, ‘That’s gonna be a little hard to explain, but alright.'”

While it was “a little weird at first,” Janelle admits she accepted it. Still “a lot of” her family didn’t “understand” her choice of being in a polygamous relationship.

Sister Wives previously revealed in 2022 that Janelle and Kody separated, with Kody now in a monogamous relationship with Robyn Brown. His marriages to Christine Brown and Meri Brown have also imploded.

Elsewhere during the Sunday, Nov. 30 episode, the family patriarch told Robyn that he wanted to make amends for his past and apologize to his exes — noting that he was hoping to see them all individually to do so. He then asked Robyn if the idea was “dumb.”

“I don’t want to apologize for what I’ve been accused of, I want to apologize for what I know I’ve done,” Kody said, before continuing in a confessional. “I don’t know what kind of order, when I will do this. I don’t know how long it’ll take me to do it. These apologies are an obligation to my conscience. I don’t know if we’ll get healing out of it. I can hope we would. The thing I’m feeling is kind of like I’ve got a pilgrimage.”

TLC has since billed Kody’s attempts to make amends as an “apology tour,” with his meeting with Janelle airing first.

Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC. Kody’s apology to Janelle will take place on Dec. 7, followed by his two-night apology to Christine on Dec. 14 and 21, and concluding with his apology to Meri on Dec. 28.
