Fans of Deadliest Catch recently saw Sig Hansen endure a medical emergency at sea. While watching him deal with the aftermath on the show, fans have also taken to social media to share their concerns. Many were divided, however, on what Hansen should do going forward.

Things Took A Turn For Sig Hansen During Deadliest Catch‘s Latest Season Finale

Sigurd “Sig” Hansen, a Seattle native, is known as a captain and co-owner of the F/V Northwestern. He has also been featured in the documentary series, Deadliest Catch, since 2005, being part of the show since the very beginning.

Sig also returned to the show with its 21st season, which wrapped up on October 31, 2025. However, fans saw him undergo a tense situation on the season’s double-episode finale.

As seen on the show, Hansen was rushed to the hospital after having collapsed on his fishing vessel. Hansen, who endured two heart attacks, explained to a doctor that he had been up for a day and a half, had consumed 15 to 20 cups of coffee, and admitted to still smoking.

The doctor gave Sig some advice, such as cutting back on caffeine and to stop smoking. He was also told to consider retirement, being told, “You’re not doing yourself any favors being on the boat.”

Fans Have Also Shared Their Concerns For Sig On Social Media

Taking to social media, many fans shared similar concerns, with many claiming they already thought Sig should be taking the measures the doctor suggested. As one fan noted, “After watching the last episode, I thought the same as what his doctor said. Time to slow down, wrap it up and enjoy the grandkids.”

A few also highlighted the health issues that have plagued other Deadliest Catch alumni. As one fan noted, “It is a rough life. People who work hard blue collar jobs play hard too. Stress on top of it, that is why Phil died,” referencing Captain Phil Harris. Phil endured a stroke during the sixth season and later died following an intracranial hemorrhage.

That said, not everyone agreed retirement would be right for Sig. As one fan noted, “A guy like him is going to die doing what he loves. Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Ultimately, many fans shared various sentiments over what happened. Some felt Sig should consider what would be best for his family. Others think he needs to do what’s best for him. Some comments included:

  • “I feel sorry for Sig’s wife. She’s like a cop’s spouse, watching him go fishing, not knowing if he’ll come home.”
  • “Easy for me to say from my couch but he is choosing fishing over his family.”
  • “He is a workaholic, he isn’t gonna step down voluntarily.”
  • “I get it … it must be very hard to hang up your skippers hat… smoking, 20 cups of coffee????”
